Here's the problem, the stihl setting gage seems to set the air gap too tight, like 0 004" measured between the ignition module arms and the flywheel magnets using a feeler gage set It seems as though the center coil pick up on the ignition module has a wider air gap Now my question, what is the proper way to measure an ignition module air gap?

Rule of thumb for a naturally aspirated engine 0 004" gap per inch of bore so in your case you should shoot for 0 016-0 017" (4 155 x 0 004) ideally If your gap is 0 032" you probably don't have the correct rings for your 402 (4 125" + 0 030) Just my guess and the reason I always get file fit rings! I use this piston ring grinder from ABS Products

Edelbrock I believe has a Performer air gap manifold, and a Performer RPM air gap The difference being the regular performer is 1,000 - 5,500 and the RPM is 1,500 - 6,500 rpm range
